Ziggy Our Scarlet Macaw
The Scarlet Macaw is one of the most colorful parrots available in the pet trade. In the wild they can live up to 40 years in forests across Central America.
In captivity they must have plenty of room to move around and play. They should be given several chew toys to help them exercise their jaw muscles and beak muscles.
Ziggy's Story
Macaws, the largest species of parrot are stunning. They are a beautiful bird that is a joy to own. These birds require a huge cage and lots of out-of-cage time to play and exercise. They are active by nature and if they don't have enough activity they'll get bored and can start self-mutilating and feather plucking. To keep them from becoming bored, provide them with chew toys and surfaces to aid in trimming their beaks. You can also utilize a parrot cargo net to let your macaw climb and play.
Scarlet macaws are a stunning bird with large swatches of blue, red, and yellow feathers. These vibrantly colored birds are known for their loud and raucous calls. Their loud chirps and squawks can be heard for miles. Their strong beaks can easily break down seeds, nuts and other plant material.
The scarlet macaw is native to the rainforests in Central and South America including southeast Mexico. It prefers humid evergreen forest at altitudes of between 1,000 and 3000 feet. They consume a variety of nuts, seeds, fruits, leaves, and berries. They are a small group and are able to bond with humans if they are raised by a human from a young age. However, they can also become aggressive when breeding season arrives.
A scarlet macaw who lives on its own can be a great companion. However the bird may get enthralled by one person and may require individualized attention and interaction. It is recommended to teach young scarlet macaws from an early age to socialize with the rest of the household. If a young scarlet macaw isn't getting enough attention, it will become bored and may take to self-mutilation.

Ziggy's Habitat

In the evening, macaws are taken back to their hideouts where they are fed and given new enrichment items to work on for the night.
A typical scarlet Macaw can last up to 15 years in being in captivity, and is well-adapted to human interaction. Their diets are designed for their species, and the birds enjoy a wide variety of fruits, vegetables, nuts, and seeds. Macaws in scarlet love to chew. Therefore, having a constant supply of sturdy toys that stand up to the power of a parrot's jaws and beak is crucial for their health.
In the wild the scarlet macaw is found in Central and South America. Each pair remains together throughout their lives. Females lay three or two eggs inside the cavity of a tree between January between January and March. The eggs hatch within five weeks after which the chicks leave their parents about one year after. Ziggy's Training

Monogamous birds, they bond for life and begin their breeding cycle about one year after they reach sexual maturity. The hen typically lays three or two eggs of white, which hatch within five weeks. The chicks are then released from the nest about 90 days after hatching and leave their parents around one year after hatching.
These birds are ideal for those with the time and the resources to give them the best care. They are smart, social and can be taught many tricks and behaviors. Although they can be loud at times, they are mostly curious and playful. Like all parrots, they must be fed high-quality food which includes a specially formulated parrot mix, fresh fruits and vegetables as well as high-calcium greens like Kale.
The main threats to the scarlet macaw include habitat loss from rainforest destruction and heavy exploitation for the trade in pets. They are included on Appendix 1 of CITES, which means that the commercial trade in these birds is prohibited.
